ARC Volunteer Appreciation Brunch April 18, 2012

Dino, Jenny, Mandy, Dave
Jenny, Shirley, Mandy
Since this is Volunteer Week, we would like to thank all those players who go out of their way to help new players learn the basics and develop their skills of pickleball at ARC. When an experienced player plays even one game with a new player, you have no idea how much the new player appreciates it and how valuable it is to the way they feel about our group. It really helps their game and brings them back. It also makes the experienced players feel good about themselves.

Dave, Shirley, Mike, Herb, Catherine and 45 other volunteers were invited to ARC Volunteer Appreciation Brunch April 18 and received Volunteer Appreciation awards from the City of Abbotsford. The speakers were Mayor Bruce Banman, Mark Taylor, General Manager Parks, Recreation & Culture, Jenny Thornton, Facility Manager, Mandy Hadfield, Recreation Manager, Ryan Coreau, Recreation Coordinator and Dino Tsembelis, Volunteer Coordinator.

The Mayor’s hair is all shaved off for cancer research: The Abbotsford Times http://www.abbotsfordtimes.com/story.html?id=6468516 1 day ago – Abbotsford Mayor Bruce Banman and Heat goalie and cancer survivor … see him sacrifice his locks and set a $30000 minimum for his head shave. … funds raised will support cancer patients and research at Abbotsford’s B.C. Cancer Agency. … The mayor sang “The Man of LaMancha” beautifully with a strong perfect voice. The Happy Gang singers entertained with some traditional songs and then we had a slideshow featuring all the volunteering activities. There was plenty of delicious food: quiches, scones, muffins, yoghurt, fresh fruit, a large cake, coffee and tea. All of us had a wonderful time !!!

120 Players Registered in Pickleball Canada National Open Championship July 7 – 8, 2012.

Pickleball Canada National Open Championship July 7 – 8, 2012.
120 players have registered. Some events are already full. Please register as soon as you can so you won’t be disappointed.

We will have 20 events in a two days tournament. ARC has 8 indoor courts and we will use an additional 6 indoor courts at Yale Secondary School next to ARC which gives us a total of 14 indoor courts for our National Tournament.

Teams are coming from all over Canada and the USA. Some players are coming as far as Ontario and Texas. This will be the largest Pickleball tournament in Canada !!!

USAPA’s National Tournament last year had about 400 players. We will have at least 150, almost half that number, unbelivable!! They had a week to do it, but we only have 2 days, therefore, we have to limit the numbers of players.

We will invite the Mayor of Abbotsford to give a speech at our Opening Ceremony on July 7. We will also invite Shaw TV and newspaper reporters to report this large National event.

Please make sure you and your partner register as soon as possible to ensure that both of you are registered in each event. If you are registered but your partner is not registered, you may not be able to play in that event because spaces are limited. You may enter a maximum of 2 events.

If you have not received your registration confirmation, please contact ARC at 604-853-4221 to make sure that you are registered. You can register in person, by mail or call ARC to register if you are paying by credit card.

We look forward to seeing you there !!!
